About

A cultural label investigating how things are made.

HOW is a cultural label investigating how things are made.

Most cultural labels tell you what: what’s new, what’s coming, what to listen to. Some tell you why: a manifesto, a worldview, a thesis. A few tell you who: the artist, the auteur, the personality.

HOW asks the question that produces all the others.

How is a record made? How is a garment cut? How is a fragrance composed? How does a culture form, persist, evolve? How do hands meet materials? How do ideas survive the trip from one mind to another?

The label is built on the conviction that the most rigorous question in any creative discipline is the one about process — and that examining the how reveals the why without having to declare it.

Working notes

We work in three media: music, objects, writing.

In music, that means recordings released slowly, with each release accompanied by notes on its making. Where the equipment came from. Who played what. What was attempted before the version we ended up with. The notes are not marketing copy. They are working documents.

In objects, that means small editions of considered things — a T-shirt printed in a city we know, a tote bag from a fabric we can name. Where each piece comes from is on the listing. We don’t make things to be precious. We make things that we can stand behind in conversation.

In writing, that means a journal that runs more like a notebook than a publication. Some pieces are essays. Some are interviews. Some are studies of materials. We publish what’s worth publishing when it’s worth publishing.

The pace

We are slow on purpose. There are good labels working at high cadence; that’s not what we are doing here. The pace of the label is set by the rigour of the practice we document.

In conversation

We work with the people who make things. Producers, writers, artisans, photographers, friends. We are interested in long collaborations rather than one-off transactions. If you make things and want to talk about how, write to us at hello@how.house.

The mark

HOW™ is the subject of UK trade mark application UK00004373208, filed 15 April 2026, currently in examination at the UK Intellectual Property Office. The application covers music, publishing, objects, retail, and live events.

Five pillars

  1. 01

    Inquiry over declaration

HOW asks. It does not pronounce. The label voice is curious, not authoritative. We open questions; we do not close them.

  2. 02

    Practice over product

The work is the centrepiece, but the making of the work is the brand identity. Process is what gets documented. Polish is what gets released.

  3. 03

    Cross-domain coherence

Music sits beside object sits beside writing sits beside event. The same inquiry runs through all of them.

  4. 04

    Slow

HOW does not chase release calendars or content cycles. Things get released when they are ready. The pace of the label is set by the rigour of the practice it documents.

  5. 05

    Documentary

Process is content. The journal on the website functions more like a working notebook than a marketing channel.
